JORDAN RIVER COMMISSION

Flood Season Dangers

Scouts, leader swept away by Jordan River – Salt Lake Tribune

This is a very unfortunate and preventable story. In addition to the challenges created by dams and other structures in the river, many of the bridges crossing the Jordan River have very little clearance in high flows and are currently impassable.

Better signage and maps indicating put-in and take-out points can help, but flows of this volume make even the best signed river extremely dangerous.

The Jordan River Commission is working on identifying a variety of projects to undertake along the river corridor ranging from preservation, to education, to removal of river obstacles. Hopefully some of these projects can prevent situations like this from occurring in the future.
