JORDAN RIVER COMMISSION

Vegetation Restoration Planting

Tall Pots Planting

This project takes place between mid October and the end of January to ensure the establishment of the trees in winter months during their dormant period.

Plants are propagated with a long and robust root system rather than focusing on a large canopy, with the idea that if the root system reaches deeper into the ground, the plant will have better access to water and nutrients and a better chance to develop.

Site Prep

Holes are augered and filled with water.

Ideally this step is in advance of a volunteer planting, but not possible in all cases.

Planting

Volunteers dig the holes out to depth of at least 36” with post hole tools (there’s always some cave in with pre-augered holes).

Holes are filled with water and allowed to drain fully to provide groundwater at the roots for the tree to get established. This may take some time.

Volunteers plant trees deep enough to fully cover the roots. Any exposed roots will wick away moisture and kill the tree.

Trees can always be planted much deeper than 36”. The buried branches and trunk will sprout roots and help stabilize the tree and bank.

Fencing

Trees are surrounded with 3 posts and circled in fencing to protect from herbivores and other damage.

Monitoring

Trees are mapped and monitored with GPS in Survey123 for data and health.
